This double lesson introduces learners to the world of taxes. We start by discussing what a tax is, types of taxes in the UK and the categories of taxes such as progressive, proportional and regressive taxation. An engaging story video on progressive taxes to highlight what it is and an evaluation. We look at VAT with some charts and graphs to contextualise it before looking at current income tax rates. We discuss the economic effects of changes in direct and indrect tax rates on other variables with examples and thought provoking questions. This double lesson introduces learners to the role of central banks in an economy. We start by looking at some notable central banks around the world to stimulate interest. We then look at the Bank of England in more detail before discussing the key functions of central banks such as implementing monetary policy, banker to the government, banker to the banks and regulation in the banking industry, particularly after the 2008 financial crisis. This double lesson builds on learners understanding of market failure from year 12, but now we focus on failure in the financial sector. A very interestesting topic due to the application of the financial crisis. We start by recapping what market failure is and how banks fail. We then look at the 2008 financial crisis to understand what happened. Examples of different market failures are given, video case studies to help students contextualise. A 15 mark question on whether banks should be bailed out, indicative points and a peer assessment grid is included for students to use. A research task, some true or false questions to consolidate, a debate, box plenary and kahoot to finish with. A link to a documentary for homework too.

This free lesson introduces learners to international competitiveness. We look at the importance of unit labour costs and export prices in determining the level of competitiveness of a nation. We go into some more detail and look at what the World Economic Forum looks at to determine international competitiveness. Pros and cons of being internationally competitive is discussed. This double lesson introduces learners to the concept of specialisation with an emphasis on comparative advantage. We start by looking at what specialisation is with examples of what some countries specialise in. We then look at a basic example of two countries producing two goods to really break down the concept of absolute and comparative advantage in an engaging way. We then look at this could be illustrated on a diagram. Some short answer exam questions for consolidation. We then look at the assumptions this model makes before having a break. We then look at a case study on Brazil, an exam style question with a model answer to peer assess using the marking grid. We finish off with a box plenary.

This double lesson introduces learners to motivation, we look at both the four theories and the variety of ways to motivate in practice. We start with looking at the four theorists, step by step with discussion, a short case study to apply the knowledge with answers on the powerpoint.
We then go onto look at financial and non financial methods of motivation before looking at a case study of a company that has been voted as one of the best places to work - we investigate what makes it such a good place to work, a 24 mark question based on this with structure guidance and a model answer provided.

We introduce learners to labour productivity, turnover, unit labour costs, employee costs as a percentage of revenue. We start with looking at the formulas for each one, with broken down examples to illustrate the concepts.
We look at a concise case study with some information on employees and productivity, using this students complete a calculation question along with group presentations on a 24 mark essay based question on labour rentention. After presentations, students can complete the 24 marker, or it could be completed for homework, structure and indicative points are provided to help with peer assesmeents.
This is followed by another case study on a construction company, who do things differently, students explore, how they keep their productivity levels up, responses to this could be done in groups and fed back to the class, we finish with a box plenary.
